FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any fly fishing experience?

Not at all. We welcome everyone from first-timers to seasoned anglers. Our guides are experienced in teaching all skill levels and will tailor the day to your comfort and experience.

What’s included in a guided trip?

All trips include a professional guide, use of top-quality rods and reels, flies, terminal tackle, and transportation to/from the river. Full-day trips also include lunch and beverages.

What should I bring?

We recommend polarized sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, weather-appropriate layers, and a Montana fishing license. We’ll provide a full packing list after you book.

How long are the trips?

Half-day trips typically last 4–5 hours, while full-day trips are around 8 hours on the water.

How do I book a trip?

You can book online directly through our website. If you have any questions or special requests, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to help.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 30 days before the trip receive a full refund. Within 30 days, deposits are non-refundable unless we can rebook the day. Trips canceled due to unsafe weather or river conditions will be fully refunded or rescheduled.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. All anglers are required to have a valid Montana fishing license, which you can purchase online before your trip.

  • Montana fishing license
  • Can I request a specific guide?

Yes! If you’ve fished with one of our guides before or have a preference, let us know at booking and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

    Do you offer multi-day trips?

We sure do. Whether you’re looking for back-to-back days on the water or a custom itinerary for a larger group, we’re happy to put together a multi-day experience tailored to you.

Can I bring my own gear?

Absolutely. You're welcome to bring your own rod, reel, or flies. Just let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.

Do you offer trips for kids or families?

Yes—our guides are great with kids and we love introducing families to fly fishing. Let us know the ages of your group and we’ll customize the experience to keep it fun and safe for everyone.

What kind of fish will we be targeting?

Mostly wild trout—cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout are common depending on the season and river. If you're after something specific, let us know!

What if the weather is bad?

We fish in most conditions, but safety is always our top priority. If conditions become unsafe, we’ll work with you to reschedule or refund your trip.

Will we be floating or wading?

Most of our trips are float trips in drift boats or rafts, which allow us to cover more water and access remote stretches. If you prefer wade fishing, we can arrange that too—just ask!

How many people can go on one trip?

Our standard setup is two anglers per guide/boat for the best experience. We can accommodate larger groups with multiple guides—perfect for families, bachelor parties, or corporate outings.

Do you offer airport pickups or lodging recommendations?

While we don’t offer airport transport, we’re happy to recommend local lodging options, restaurants, and things to do in the area. We want your Montana trip to be incredible—on and off the water.

    Where are you located?

We’re based in northwest Montana and guide on several iconic rivers in the region. Exact meeting locations depend on river conditions and trip type and will be confirmed after booking.

    What makes Riverstone Outfitters different?
